-----<back cover text>

Where did you come from?
What is your purpose?
What happens when you die?

These questions--and more--are answered in 'The
Bible Explained', which is based on the teachings
of the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible is a collection
of ancient books which claim to be the word of the
one and only God. This one and only God claims to
be the sole creator, owner, and sustainer of all
things; he further claims to hold the one and only
key to eternal life. Are these claims true? Get
the facts and then decide for yourself.

This document is meant to be understood by everyone,
and is therefore written in plain, simple language,
avoiding complex religious jargon.

Understand the Bible like never before.

Appendix B: The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments is the one and only path to life eternal, as Jesus said: "But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." [Matthew 19:17] The Ten Commandments are so important that God himself wrote them with his own finger: "And when He (God) had made an end of speaking with him (Moses) on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God." [Exodus 31:18] God wrote the Ten Commandments with his own finger so that men will have no excuse in the Day of Judgement -- no one will be able to make the claim: 'God did not write the Ten Commandments, so he is not qualified to judge us by them.' Here is a list of the Ten Commandments, interspersed with comments:

1) "You shall have no other gods besides Me." [Exodus 20:3] God must be the most important thing in your life. Let nothing come between you and God. All your decisions must be based on the word of God. The first commandment is the most important, since it gives one hope for the future; without a creator, life is pointless and hopeless. Without the first commandment, the rest are irrelevant, since the first commandment gives one hope for a future; without hope for a future, one has no reason to keep the other commandments, since everything ends in the grave. (Remember: the purpose of the commandments is to obtain life eternal in the presence of God.)

2) "You shall not make for yourself a carved image -- any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments." [Exodus 20:4-6] God must not be represented by things, such as statues, paintings, crucifixes, etc. If you use something to represent God, the devil may take that thing and profane it.

3) "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain." [Exodus 20:7] The name of God is holy, and should therefore be treated with utmost respect; one must not make a mockery of God or his nature; do not misrepresent God's character, by word or deed. If you make a vow in the name of God, you must keep it; if you give your word, you must keep it -- even to your own detriment.

4) "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." [Exodus 20:8-11] You are required to work on the first six days of the week and rest on the seventh day -- the Sabbath. The Sabbath begins at Friday sunset and ends at Saturday sunset. Since work is not permitted on the Sabbath, it is wise to prepare things needed for the Sabbath on the day prior to said Sabbath. Of course, you can simply rest and fast on the Sabbath if you so choose. (Note: Jesus demonstrated that, for practical reasons, one may lawfully violate the letter of Sabbath observance. For example, firefighters, police officers, medical doctors, etc., may break the Sabbath law in order to do good, however, they must still rest one day out of seven.)

5) "Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you." [Exodus 20:12] You honour your parents by obeying them when you are young, and by caring for them when they are old.

6) "You shall not murder." [Exodus 20:13] Murder is the unjust killing of a human being. There are two types of murders: intentional and accidental. The former is punishable by death, the latter by imprisonment.

7) "You shall not commit adultery." [Exodus 20:14] Adultery is any sexual relation outside of marriage; and marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of everyone else.

8) "You shall not steal." [Exodus 20:15] Stealing is taking that which is not rightfully yours. There are many ways to steal: not performing fair work for your wages; charging more than a product is worth; making money without producing anything useful in the process; etc.

9) "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour." [Exodus 20:16] Do not give false testimony against your neighbour, since it perverts justice, which leads to lawlessness and chaos.

10) "You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's." [Exodus 20:17] Do not desire that which belongs to someone else, since the desire of someone else's property is the beginning (seed) of sin.
