MCDONALD'S FOOD LIKELY TO BE BANNED IN RUSSIA

The production and sales of some of McDonald's products is likely to be
banned In Russia. Legal sanctions may affect cheeseburgers and royal
cheeseburgers, filet-o-fish, chicken burgers, ice cream with berry fillings
and milkshakes. Such requirements were submitted to the Tverskoy Court of
Moscow from the Russian Federal Service for Consumer Rights
(Rospotrebnadzor) in the Novgorod region, RIA Novosti reports.

Representatives of Rospotrebnadzor said that the content of fat, protein and
carbohydrates in these product did not correspond to the data indicated in
information sheets. The violation was revealed as a result of a routine
checkup conducted in May of this year in two restaurants of the chain in the
city of Novgorod. Inspection officers found significant violations of the
law, the lawsuit says.

The hearings on the case will be held in August. The restaurants, where the
violations were found, are likely to be closed before the trial starts.

However, Rospotrebnadzor officials in Novgorod said that the department was
not going to ban the entire production and sales of McDonald's in Russia.
The head of the regional department, Anatoly Rossolovsky, said that the
department only required the company should inform consumers properly about
the amount of fats and carbohydrates in food products,  ITAR-TASS said.

Spokespeople for McDonald's Russia said, though, that the company had not
received any complaints from Rospotrebnadzor, nor had it received any
information about the lawsuit. According to the corporation, all the food in
the restaurants of the chain is produced in accordance with methods approved
by the Russian authorities.

McDonald's had been repeatedly accused of misleading customers in the
information about food ingredients. A few years ago, it was reported that
laboratory experts at the Institute of Nutrition o the Russian Academy of
Sciences, who examined the content of a milkshake from the food chain, said
that it contained vegetable oils, including unhealthy palm oil. The experts
found that there were no dangerous preservatives used in the restaurants of
the chain, but the norm of salt, sugar and fat was above the norm.

Recently, McDonald's in China was suspected of selling of expired products.
Reportedly, Shanghai Husi Ltd was supplying expired meat, which was then
used for the production of McDonald's burgers.

In the wake of the Ukrainian crisis, several McDonald's restaurants were
closed in the Crimea, after the peninsula reunited with Russia. Afterwards,
the head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, Vladimir Zhirinovsky,
who is known for his aversion for McDonald's food since the 1990s, offered
to close all restaurants of the chain in Russia.

Reportedly, the Crimean Peninsula will have RusBurger restaurants instead.
This is a Russian fast-food chain that uses only Russian, environmentally
friendly products. The chain takes account of regional and national
preferences of the population of the Russian Federation, the website of the
company says.

Noteworthy, deputy head of the Committee for Budget and Taxes, Oksana
Dmitrieva, told ITAR-TASS that the decision to close the network of
McDonald's restaurants in Russia could be only a political decision. "This
issue is not economic, but a political one, and such an initiative may only
come from the president," she said.

Deputy head of the Committee for Agriculture, Nadezhda Shkolkina,  (United
Russia), on the contrary, believes that "this is an issue of junk food, not
politics."

RUSSIAN AGENCY HAS FILED A LAWSUIT IN MOSCOW
COURT SEEKING TO BAN MCDONALD'S BURGERS, MILK SHAKES
AND ICE CREAM
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/business/article/russian-agency-seeks-ban-on-mcdonalds-burgers-ice-cream/504066.html

McDonald's burgers and shakes may become the latest victims of worsening
ties between Moscow and Washington after a Russian consumer watchdog agency
accused the U.S. chain of sanitary violations.

McDonald's, which opened its first Russian restaurant in Moscow in 1990,
became an iconic symbol of flourishing American capitalism during the fall
of the Soviet Union.

But its Golden Arches may be in the Kremlin's crosshairs as ties between
Moscow and Washington have fallen to their lowest point since the end of the
Cold War with consecutive rounds of U.S. sanctions over Russia's role in the
Ukraine crisis.

"We have identified violations which put the product quality and safety of
the entire McDonald's chain in doubt," Anna Popova, head of the Federal
Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service and Russia's chief sanitary
inspector, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

The watchdog agency has previously been accused of acting in the political
interests of the Kremlin, banning Georgian wine as Tbilisi strengthened ties
with Washington and spirits from Moldova after the former Soviet republic
boosted its drive to partner with the European Union.

A Moscow court told Reuters that a regional branch of the watchdog had asked
it to declare production and sales of some McDonald's products illegal after
the agency carried out inspections of McDonald's restaurants last June.

The regulator says the company is deceiving consumers about the energy value
of its Cheeseburger Royales, Filet-o-Fish, Cheeseburgers and Chicken Burgers
and about the nutritional value of its milkshakes and ice creams.

Its also said in a statement that Caesar wrap sandwiches and a vegetable
salad were contaminated with coliform bacteria, which indicates a likelihood
of food poisoning.

McDonald's, which boasts of long lines at its restaurants across Moscow,
some of which sit in view of the Kremlin's red walls, said it had not
received any complaint from the regulator and had no information about the
lawsuit.

"For the 25 years that McDonald's has been working in the Russian market,
its main priority has been to provide quality and safe products to our
visitors," the company said by email.

It added that its calculations of energy and nutritional value were based on
the methodologies approved by the state Russian institution.

The court will hold a preliminary hearing on Aug. 13 with the key hearing
likely to be scheduled for September, the court's spokeswoman said.

McDonald's operates about 400 restaurants in Russia and sees the country as
one of its top seven major markets outside the United States and Canada,
according to its 2013 annual report.

The fast-food chain has often become subject to boycotts in various
countries as a form of opposition to U.S. actions. In 2003, the French
boycotted McDonald's to protest against the war in Iraq.

In April, some Russian politicians called for all McDonald's outlets in the
country to be shut after the company closed its restaurants in Crimea, whose
annexation by Russia in March triggered U.S. and European sanctions.

MOST RUSSIANS WANT MCDONALD'S CLOSED (Poll Says)

62% (Sixty-Two Percent) OF RESPONDENTS SUPPORT THE
CLOSURE OF ALL MCDONALD'S IN RUSSIA
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/most-russians-support-mcdonald-s-closures-poll-says/497989.html

Liberal Democrat Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky's call to close all
McDonald's restaurants in Russia received a lot of media attention, and a
recent poll shows that most Russians would be glad to see the back of the
fast food chain.

Sixty-two percent of respondents support the closure of all McDonald's in
Russia, according to a survey conducted by SuperJob's Research Center in the
week that followed the company's announcement that it was shutting its three
restaurants in Crimea.

Younger Russians were more likely to defend the Big Mac purveyor, with 33
percent of those aged below 24 saying they wouldn't like to see the golden
arches disappear from their towns.

SuperJob said that respondents' explanations for their choices were often
rooted in patriotism, with many saying that U.S. fast-food franchises should
be replaced by cafes serving domestic cuisine. Those against shuttering the
restaurants, which first opened to a massive fanfare in Russia in 1990,
cited a lack of good cheap alternatives.

McDonald's April 3 announcement about its Crimean suspension spurred
headlines that ran the gamut from Zhirinovsky's comments to reports that
Burger King would open restaurants on the former Ukrainian peninsula.

Burger King Worldwide later denied reports that it plans to expand into
Crimea.

The poll was conducted from April 4 to 10 among 1,600 respondents in 249
cities and towns across Russia. No margin of error was given.
