" A group of Native Hawaiians who tried to halt a Maui
  Halloween party by filing suit failed to convince a
  judge on Thursday that the holiday was a mockery of
  their culture.

   Maui Judge Rhonda Loo tossed out a complaint from
   Hawaiian group Na Makua o’ Maui and Kula resident
   Richard Dancil, who had sought a temporary restraining
   order to stop the Lahaina Halloween event.

   The suit contended the event, returning after a
   4-year hiatus, bred “insensitivity to the Hawaiian
   host culture” and caused harm to “at risk” sacred
   and historic Hawaiian grounds in Lahaina — especially
   when revelers urinated on them.

   But the judge disagreed, dismissing the suit because
   the Hawaiian group couldn’t fully explain themselves
   or their position, according to Maui County spokesman
   Rod Antone.

   Maui County officials argued that businesses would be
   harmed if the celebration was stopped.

   In the past, the event has drawn 30,000 to 40,000 to
   Lahaina’s Front Street and was promoted as the
   “Mardi Gras of the Pacific.” Party-goers dressed in
   scanty costumes, displayed drunken behavior and
   urinated on sacred Hawaiian sites, the suit alleged.

   “This Halloween party allows nudity, drunkenness and
   use of drugs on sacred grounds. Participants in the
   past have violated the state law through ‘offensively
   coarse behavior’ demonstrated by Halloween participants
   which caused its prohibition for the past 4 years,”
   a signed affidavit from Dancil stated.

   But the judge wasn’t convinced that the party would
   harm Dancil, Antone said.

   Arakawa was named in the complaint, along with the
   county Office of Economic Development, the county
   Planning Department and the Lahainatown Committee.

   The event will go on as planned on October 31."

   that 21-year-old Christopher Montilliano Jr. refrain from
   drinking Pepsi while on probation because he lied to police
   during his arrest, The Maui News reported Saturday.
   Montilliano told officers that his cousin had allowed
   him to drive the stolen car and that he was on his
   way to buy soft drinks.
