OK, I've checked out the mb combo offerings for a few minutes and it
is intriguing, and intimidating to ponder constructing such a
computer. I've replaced/added hd's, RAM, video & sound cards, floppy
drives, CD drives, etc. But, when my power supply died, I had it
replaced by a pro. Building a system from mb combo, case, et al,
would involve a learning curve for sure. Might be rewarding though IF
I was successful and didn't end up paying a pro to straighten out
whatever difficulties I ran into.
A question: Does the Xeon processor offer a significant speed
advantage over a similarly clocked 32 bit processor?

not to advertise here but www.pricewatch.com has some good prices on
mb combos. You could replace what you have and still be crunching with
the 733 with the FreeSCO Linux disk. It lets you use just a mb, cpu,
memory, floppy drive, and power supply to cruch units.

I knew it would happen eventually, unless I upgraded my computer.
Four and a half years ago, my HP Pavilion 733 was considered high end,
and cost around $2,500. I've also got some even slower units
crunching at my workplace. And, up until very recently, I was
maintaining a slow steady climb up the "nth place" out of total users.
I made a post patting myself on the back at the 6,000 mark about 20
hours ago ... at which time I stood at 23,919th place. In twenty
hours, I slipped five whole notches to 23,924th place. : (
So, with my present crunching power, I will continue to slide down, no
doubt. I designed a dream machine at Dell's web site ... $11,000 in a
tower, LOL. I am itching for a new computer but not THAT much
computer. In the meantime, my old 733 does almost everything to my
satisfaction. Someday it will fry something, then I'll upgrade by
necessity.
