seti@home has been going for some time now,
I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the average processing time
per unit was back when we began, and if there's a graph of how this
has decreased over time. Purely from an intellectual exercise.

I have a little useful info for you. First of all, until about
December 23, 2000 Setis analyzers were less thorough than they are
now. In my case it took my computer only 3/5 as long to process a unit
before then as after. Thatll put a stairstep in the historical
processing time graph if you find one. On January 1, 2002 the average
processing time was about 15.0 hours. One year later it was about 10.6
hours. Now it is about 9.3 hours.

See (unofficial):

In forty-five months, the worldwide average for processing a SETI@home
work unit has gone from 30.5 CPU-hours on 5-Jul-1999 to 10.4 CPU-hours
on 29-Mar-2003, due to faster machines.

Although I no longer get to see the graph there!

Interestingly, s@h's WUs pool seems to be much larger than in the past,
and the tape splitters are running much slower than usual (12 days+
rather than approx 2 to 4 days)... I wonder if the reobservation WUs
have upset the balence somewhat?
