Well if the performance was unacceptable then you did something horribly 
wrong. Linux is not that far different than most other OSs. The thing with 
linux is that, depending on your install options, you may have far too much 
started by default. A little linux experience will help you realize those 
things that you need or do not need.

But to answer your original question, linux is smart enough to manage 
processor affinity on it's own. Did you even install an SMP kernel? Maybe 
that's why you think it's not up to par...
