I'm running the CLI - SetiSpy - SetiQueue combination under Wine with
KDE. (The Gnome desktop gives a few funnies with my setup.) Look up the
Wine Mandrake rpm via http://www.winehq.com
How bad is the performance hit with wine, both generally and with seti in
particular? I had decided not to use wine (instead just rebooting to
windows when necessary), but if worse comes to worse I might try it.
What performance hit?...
Since fully moving over from Windoze, I've not noticed any significant
change in my WU times. The average results-per-day seems to be on a
slight upwards trend.
Using Wine, you can use the much better optimised Win-NT 3.03 client.
The native Linux client is reported to be less well optimised by the
compiler/settings used by the s@h folk. (And the 3.08s appear to be even
less optimised...)
The hit you do take is in the shinanigans in setting up Wine and then
the seti stuff on top. You're welcome to copy my setup if you wish.
The simplest route is probably the native Linux client and native
add-ons. I got Wine running so as to seemlessly keep crunching while
dual booting into Windoze for various requirements. Since learning a
little more about the Linux environment, not had to boot Windoze for
quite some time!
