I have recently upgraded my system with a new processor (I've replaced
the old Athlon 950 with an Athlon XP 2000+). The WU times are down,
that's the good part, the bad part is that every time S@H finishes one
WU, the system just hangs. In order to start a new one, I must set he MBO
jumper so that the CPU FSB frequency is 100 MHz (effectively slowing the
processor). After about one percent of the WU is done, I can turn the
computer off, take out the jumper, and the S@H resumes its work on a
higher frequency, until it finishes and hangs again. It's a real pain
removing the jumper and butting it back in, especially now when I should
do it every 3 to 4 hours. Any ideas you might have will be appreciated.
It is very likely that your CPU is overheating - the first few minutes of a
WU heat an Athlon up as hot as it ever gets, thus 'locking up' at the start
of a WU is a clear sign of a CPU running too hot. Since you've only just
fitted the 2000+ I suspect it maybe be due to poor contact between the
heatsink and the CPU core.
Are you running any hardware monitoring software..? Motherboard Monitor 5
(MBM5) is a great utility for this although it can be a little complicated
to get it setup correctly - most Athlon motherboard manuafcturer's have
their own version on hardware monitoring software that is preset for their
motherboards. What sort of temperature is the CPU core running at during
those first few minutes..?
One cure is to reseat the heatsink with good quality thermal paste.
