Hi FF,

Since 09 Sep, the Berkeley FTP Server has something new (and different
to
offer) (?)
The "CPDN_2_2_23.exe", weigthing in at some 7.6MB...
Is : Win32 Climate Prediction Client, by University of Oxford...
I wonder if this is an error, and the Program got there by accident ?
Normally, the ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/ Server holds only SETI
Clients, which
often take several days before being Linked on the HTML Download Page if
they are new.
AFAIK Berkely is co-operating with the UK Met Office and others in the
climate mapping
effort:-)
And you have to register to participate etc, think one map could take up
to
8 weeks to do:-)
Only thing that concerns me is what profit some firms may try to make out
of
it:-/ After all
a very accurate global weather mapping program would be worth a lot to
firms
who supply
weather data to farmers, shipping etc.
Anyway I've yet to try it out, but I'll have a look in the forums they set
up via the UK Met
office and see what the score is before I do, they're a seperate
registration item..
Cheers,
RD

There's a forums link at the top of this home page, and a great deal of
discussion in general, including the possibility of forming a team, in the
open forum pages of ars Technica.
Both Berkeley & MIT are providing servers Stateside, as well as 4 others
outside the States.
Official kick-off was to be today 12.09.03.
They actually came out of beta early, & are officially crunching as of
yesterday. They had in excess of 3K ppl crunching as of 11:00P CST
(GMT -6) yesterday.
Should take 22 -30 days for a reasonably decent performing desktop (2.4-2.8
P4) per WU. The WU's are currently covering 1950 - 2000AD.
AFAIK, they do not have any stats or teams set up as of yet.
It sounds like a pretty cool project, and I'm considering joining, and am in
discussions in another forum. I was waiting for BOINC/Seti II, and the stats
to reset. But even so, there's so many heavy hitters & big-time farmers, I
feel completely uncompetitive in Seti. I'm not saying I'm leaving Seti for
sure, but getting in on the ground floor of what may start out as a niche
project, being competitive, becoming involved in forming a team, and being
involved in the early learning and development process of clients,
utilities, optimization, etc., has its appeal. Maybe even charter & CMSG an
n/g, if demand warrants it. I've been limitedly involved in the creation of
a n/g, but never a DC team. Sounds like it could be fun.
