WinNT, 2K, XP, and 2003 all keep active processes in memory if possible.
SETI shouldn't be swapping if you have sufficient memory. Based on my
experiences, I recommend the following minimum memory levels:

NT: 128Kb
2K: 256Kb
XP: 512Kb
2003: 512Kb

The upper end of memory is dependent on how fast your processor is and how
many processes you run at a time. The old rule of thumb about stepping down
one level of processor clock speed and adding memory to keep the system
price the same is still valid for getting the most bang for the buck.

There was a thread a while ago from a guy who was trying to get Win XP
to use up the RAM before it started into the swapfile, sort of like
the conservativeswapfile=1 for Win 98.

Does anyone remember how he made out? I can't seem to find his posts.

That's me & no, I didn't find any way to match Win98's
"ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1" in WinXP.

There's a way to make WinXP/2k stop paging out .DLLs but that's it AFAIK.

Just go into the registry with regedit and reset "DisablePagingExecutive"
to
1...

Looking at some of the other keys in that same area, they may have some
effect but I'm not knowledgeable enough to risk tweaking them until I get
a
good setuop 'ghosted off' - something I keep meaning to do but never get
around to. I already have all my data backed up on other machines and
CDR -
just not a complete 'system' ghost copy is all.
