Interesting question. I've been thinking of the same subject, but in
a slightly different vein. The question is, given a budget, say
arbitrarily $10000, what would be the most cost effective, in terms of
maximum work unit output and power consumed, way to spend the $10k
over a period of a year? Expenditure could be made at any time, buy
the computers up front and have enough left over to pay the electric
bill for the rest of the year.
Certainly it won't be in running a farm of $100 used Pentium 133's.
And it won't be in running a few high-priced Pentium4-3.2GHz's either.
Where do you suppose the sweet spot is? A rack full of Dell 2400s
with 2.2G Celerons at $459 a pop?
