Dear Ma'ams and Sirs,

Wow, checking the Powerleap website, the 1.4 GHz Celeron conversion was just
reduced $30 :) to $120. The 1.1 GHz PIII was reduced $10 to $220. However,
even if they were both free, the issue would be which crunches WUs faster.

The Celeron is slower given the closeness in mhz.

Thanks for letting me push all your buttons. I had a feeling it would be
close.

They don't mention the cache sizes; I assume they are the usual 512/half
speed and 256/full speed. Bob blew my mind with:

Does the tuali have a longer pipeline?... minor changes in preprocessing
algorithms, or any other changes, can have huge implications for SETI
performance...

No way to predict the future with Seti. They keep things pretty close
to the vest.

I don't know Bob. I asked you first. But I think I saw something,
somewhere, about the modern Celerons having improved their cache pipelines.
It is vague marketing phrases like this that are tilting me to the Celeron.

Celeron has the advantage of costing less for a given mhz.

Beside, I did exchange emails with Powerleap, and they sent a terse,
two-word recommendation for the 1.4 GHz Celeron. I couldn't believe it.
That's why I had to check with y'all.

For one, if the 1.4 GHz Celeron is cheaper, faster, and recommended, why
would they bother to offer a 1.1 GHz PIII? Just to satisfy people that
don't ask first for a recommendation?

People like choices.

Chris mentioned putting my money toward a new computer. I'll be happy to
build whatever Lambchop recommends, and I'll be sure to come back here for
more input. But as a compulsive obssesive, I would like to get this
computer topped off before I move it to the rear of the farm.

We all do what we can in that regard.

Hmmm, farrrrrrrrrm. Last time I wrote to alt.seti.sci., a router and LAN
seemed like unobtainable magic. Since then, I got a wireless LAN, and I'm
ready to roll. I guess there is progress. :)

I started with 1 computer also and now have 15 processing units, 11
full time!
I also have gone the wired/wireless route but have added a bridge to
the mix. It connects the downstairs computers to the upstairs ones
without wires, or the need to put wireless cards in every computer.
