You say you're using i586 architecture, but it's a Pentium 3? If it's a
P3, it's actually i686-compatable. Anything Pentium and higher by Intel
is i686 compatable.

so, the correct arch is i686
Yeah, you can either install glibc in there (likely side-by-side with
your libc-2.1)

without messing up my working system...
or just stick with the 3.03 client.
