I usually recommend complete replacement if any ONE component gets
fried by a surge.  As you unfortunately learned the hard way, not all
damage is instantly fatal.  I usually provide a letter explaining my
credentials and experience to the client's insurance company
describing the types of damage that may not be immediately observable.
I do not recall a claim being refused.....
