The new Opterons with their 1MB caches crunch s@h rather quickly!
This just goes to show the same discussion 2-3 years ago on the P3
Coppermine (256Kb L2) and the P3 Xeon (L2 1 Mb+) still holds up. The
latter (Xeon) was capable of crunching 2 WUs at the same time due to the
size of the L2.
On a clock-for-clock basis they were far quicker than the plain Jane P3
and AMD equivalents way back when. The problem was they were
horrendously expensive.
On the basis of a L2 cache, the new P4 based Xeons (L2 512Kb) are a
backwards step. However, this is made up (expensively) by 1-4 Mb L3
cache now.
