I guess I'd do as Mark Taylor suggested - run the NT version under Wine.
From most reports I've heard, if you're in X, it doesn't really steal
that much performance as far as packet crunching is concerned.
I'd really focus more on what you might be able to do in order to get
the Linux box connected to the WWW.
There's crossover cable and two NICs, or you could put a modem in it, or
connect it with a Parrallel port and PLIP, or wifi, or irda...
Or, if the system is far removed from other one, you may find you need
an RFC 1149 implementation. I've heard it can be implemented without
actual avionics. If you find you need to implement any kind of traffic
shaping or QoS stuff, you may want to check out RFC 1149's big brother
RFC 2549. I haven't actually heard of anybody implementing this one,
unfortunately, while I know at least some folks do implement RFC 1149.
Using Linux's TUN driver, RFC 1149 can be fairly readily implemented,
although I don't honestly know how complex it might be to find an
implementation that allows RCF 1149 communications with Windows.
