VectorLinux should run fine on a 486 if you have 16MB of RAM (maybe less
without the gui), run the command line S@H client. You don't need the gui
so the HD space should be well under 350 MB. http://www.vectorlinux.com/

Do you call this a real answer? I don't want to touch Linux with a
10 foot pole (been there done that. First time ~10 years ago and absolutely
hate it).

Besides what's fun with that? I want to port the source of the
cmdline set@home client to DOS and the Watt-32 stack (which
is very BSD-socket compatible I must say). I could probably do
w/o the filelocking and other Unix centric stuff.

There is no source for Seti, it is closed source binaries only so you are outa
luck, also those machines would take so long to process a unit that would
make the result worthless.

Unless you are going to hook them up into a personal distributed computing
machine, which I don`t think you could do on dos :)

Oh about the Linux gibe, have you looked at it lately? I think you might be
mildly surprised at the advances in 10 years, in fact just think where M$ was
10 years ago and see what they are churning out now, on second thoughts wrong
comparison :)
