VectorLinux should run fine on a 486 if you have 16MB of RAM (maybe less

Do you call this a real answer? I don't want to touch Linux with a
10 foot pole (been there done that. First time ~10 years ago and absolutely
hate it).
By heck! An awful lot has happened since 10 years ago!!!

is very BSD-socket compatible I must say). I could probably do
w/o the filelocking and other Unix centric stuff.
And all very good easy robust stuff that works also.
So why would that be a problem? You should not need to explicitly use
it. In any case, the MS ways of filelocking are
*far* *more*
*troublesome* and quirkyly restrictive.
Sounds like you have a very easy existing solution using Linux.
(But then, why waste electricity with 486s unless they have some other
real world service to provide?)
