Under the 'Work' tab I see "Ready to report" behind finished wu's, even
when they were returned as can be seen in the 'Messages' pane. Why is
that?

It used to be that the results were sent back, but you didn't get the
credit. The way it is now, the results are sent back, and wait in the
window as sent but "ready to report" and as soon as the credit is given,
the result clears out; that is, when BOINC receives the reply from the
scheduler.

AFAIU that's how it works now ;o)
