Open Regedit.
Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Expand Software
Expand Microsoft
Expand Windows
Expand CurrentVersion
Expand RunServices
Enter a new String Value named SETI (the name isn't important). The value
for it is the complete path to the client. Include any switches on want on
the client.

First, running the SETI CLI as a service hides the console window. I have
run the CLI (and SETI Driver) as a service on Win98, so I know it works.
I'll find the registry key tomorrow at work where I have access to Win98
boxes. It's much simpler than under NT, 2K, and XP.
Second, Larry is correct that this is a replacement
"c:\windows\_Default.pif" file. There is a description of what it does at
http://www.wakeassoc.com/setidriver/Download_and_Installation.htm. The
only
change that is really needed is to clear the "Warn if still active"
checkbox
on the Misc tab. No other changes are made. Note that this appears to
modify Windows 95, 98, and ME to handle 16 bit DOS, 16 bit Windows (Win
3.11
and earlier), and 32 bit Windows console applications (such as the SETI
CLI). All three of these types of programs are managed by a Windows
module
called WinOldAp, which Windows 95, 98, and ME configures at system
startup.
Note that the ONLY DOCUMENTED method to fix the application shutdown issue
in these OSs is to use a PIF file. There is another, undocumented method
that uses conagent.exe, which is one of the Win9x internal support
programs
directly, but if the SETI CLI should crash for any reason, you won't be
able
to restart it without rebooting the machine because Windows doesn't get
the
message to close the data files, including lock.sah. SETI won't start if
it
can't open lock.sah in exclusive mode. I have also run across references
to
using rundll32 with switches to start the client to do the same thing.
The
problem here is that rundll32's switches are undocumented as well (If
someone has a URL at MS documenting rundll, please post it so I can get
these switches as rundll32 is a major workhorse in Windows.)

I checked it out. It may run SETI, but is no way running as a
"background
service."
So I go back to my statement; NT4, Win2K and WinXP will run the command
line version as a
NT service.
