There is also the issue of how many of the addresses were from Exchange servers that were configured with one of the standard M$ holes that allowed open mailing.

Any attempt at spamming back will most likely get you more spam.

There are so many holes for spammers to use and thousands of compromised computers that as many others on this list have pointed out, any data gathered has to be processed with a grain of salt.

I have upgraded to Mozilla 1.5 and the junk filtering is quite good.  My wife is very happy with how well it is working.  Now 99% of the junk is automatically trashed.  And there is still tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking built-in. :)
