I have an old e-machines computer that I would like to use for setiathome
but I am not sure how to do this since the old computer has no internet
connection. My current computer that I use for seti has a cable modem and I
am using command line client. I do not plan on connecting the old one to the
router. I already have the command line client installed and have two
results ready. Is there a way to do it with the floppy disk? Thank You in
advance.
Sure, just copy the directories containing the results to a floppy, move
the floppy to your connected system, run the client from the floppy in
each directory to return the result and get a new WU, then move the floppy
back to the old system, delete the old directories, and copy the new ones
from the floppy. Restart the client, and you're all set.
If you're running SETI Driver (recommended), it's even easier--it has the
results in a subdirectory below the main SETI Driver directory; copy to
floppy, rename to be higher numbers than the queued folders on your main
system, copy them to that system, copy a couple of queued WU folders to
the floppy, rename and copy back to the emachine.
If the emachine has a modem and you have access to a dialup connection,
you can connect to transfer results and WU that way; it only takes a few
minutes, even at 33.6Kb, to get a couple of units and return the results.
And, you can always add a network adapter to each system, connect with a
crossover cable, and run SETI Queue on the main system to serve WU and
retrieve results--making it a maintenance free setup.
