Subject: Getting maximum performance out of your SETI machines and hitting a threshold.

Here goes for my 1st post (my appologies in advance it's a crap1 and having
got the flu I not in the rewrite mood)..............

OK went mad a bit this week when s@h was offline and I could not churn any
units (I just churn wu's no cache, no logs, no time). So I thought I'd
elevate my 'to-do' implement a SETI cache strategy for the farm...

Things start rolling with SETI-Q and then I dumped that for one I wrote to
distribute 'selective' wu's to the farm and note the units I have
done/pending in a database (SETIlog.csv files are also thrown into the db
for good measure).

THEN I started seeing pointers on tuning things up.... I applied some of
them and made some up myself....

RIGHT I'M NOW FULLY NOCTAINED AND FUELED UP knocking out units like never
before with gains from anywhere between 50 ~ 100% !!!

So what's my problem ? I have a cool setup and increased yield............

Well it's my results : Check these 3 machines for example as given by
SETIwatch.

Machine 1 : (Lowly Pentium-M Sony TR1MP laptop 256Meg DDR) Win XP : Avg WU
time = 3 hours on the dot. ||| However I did read the P-M Centrino is a bit
special ;)

Machine 2 : Athlon XP 2000+ 1G DDR (266) : Avg WU time = 3 hours 10 mins on
the dot.

Machine 3 : Athlon XP 2000+ 256Meg DDR (333) : Avg WU time = 3 hours on the
dot.

WHY am I hitting the same time per work unit ? time and time again for angle
ranges above 1.

Real results in reverse order of receipt from a machine
CPU time : 2hr 56 min 09 sec
CPU time : 2hr 55 min 15 sec
CPU time : 2hr 57min 00 sec
CPU time : 2hr 57min 13 sec
CPU time : 3hr 00min 11 sec
CPU time : 2hr 57min 52 sec

Pattern is the same for the other boxes... Have I reached a threshold ? In
the meantime I'm going to Overclock one of the boxes to see if I see things
differently.

Can anyone shed some light ? Can I not go faster ?

Joe Bloggs.
