I have heard two bad things about AMD from 2 independent techs:
1) they run hot and if the cpu fan goes, then your cpu is fried

Both examples from you are poor accounts and meaningless.
*Any* of the latest high clock rate CPUs will go into meltdown with bad
heatsinking. The only thing that might save you is if there is a fast
enough acting motherboard forced shutdown for a CPU overheat.
As for the voltages... Well... How good is your motherboard and PSU?
(And 'tech support' can be anything from mediocre to 'dead monkeys'...)
Check the tech stuff out for yourself.
Happy crunching,
