When I opened Setup, I saw that the 'start processing at startup' option had
been checked ... so that does not explain the absence of activity. I *had*
thought that a single processor machine should have the "CPU number" set
to "0" ... but since changing it to "1", everything seems to work OK !

The "CPU" number means CPU 0 not zero CPU's. It is for dual/HT machines.
Unless you have the "start processing at startup" box checked you have to
tell it to start processing everytime you start it.
