You've already said it I believe - GUI. Put the CLI on and see the
differnece that makes
I'm sure it will -- it improves the other machine's turnaround by
something over 10% :-) But I'm talking about a sudden 3- or 400%
increase in turnaround on a machine *on which nothing else has changed.*
Before Jan 1/2 it was taking around 5-6 hours per unit, now it's up to
20 hours. I've been running the GUI throughout . I'm sure I'd spot some
other signs if the machine's performance had degraded that much!

I've found NT/XPs own resource viewing tools too simple (Task Manager)
or too complicated, and may be compromised by trojans. Try TaskInfo
http://www.iarsn.com/ for an easy to use view of what's going on inside
the PC. You might still need to use the resource plotter thingy to check
NIC or other non-disk i/o or port use tho'.
ISTR that a few months ago there was an XP service pack or hotfix that
had a bad effect on s@h and other programs. Google or someone else here
might recall the details.
Jan 1st sounds suspicious. Did some software's licence or security
certificate run out? Try turning the clock back to last year.
Cheers,
Chris.
