Shouldn't (does) SETI be announcing this on their site?
There's also the philosophical issue that SETI was originally intended to
utilize _unused CPU cycles_, after the "real" work is done. Back in
prehistoric times, computers were not intended primarily to run SETI, and
SETI@Home did not expect itself to be considered highest priority when a
computer purchase was considered.
I think they got a better response than they expected. For a while,
productivity was so high that Berkeley had trouble uploading and downloading
all the WUs that were being processed. They had to react by installing new
fiber optics and upgrade their internet connection to keep up with all the
enthusiastic participants.
In response to modern times, there are a couple of websites that will help
answer the question, "What's the best computer for SETI?"
http://www.teamlambchop.com/ . This website is broken for the moment,
surprisingly. I hope that's not permanent. They have a large database of
computer systems vs. WU completion time.
http://www.carolynsclinic.f2s.com/ . Check it out.
Another strategy is to connect a number of computers to a router, and have
them all crunching SETI for your account. It's also an opportunity to learn
about networking, and to test the capacity of your electrical service.
Cheers,
