ADSL won't slow your processing.  It sounds like there is something that is running in the background as well as seti.  This is possible if your ADSL is an internal modem.  I will only use external modems.

If you are running Windows, check to ensure that you don't have a virus and all of the latest patchs, updates and fixes have been installed.  I have read that the time of life before you are attacked is minutes after setting up a new connection.

The new sasser worm will slow machines down and does not require any intereaction between users to allow your machine to be attacked.
