I heard, in the past, that if a wu takes >1 week to be returned they send it
out to another user. Recently I heard that is no longer true. So I did a
search through their FAQ pages and came up with this as the best answer:

 What happens to work units that never get returned by us? Are they lost
forever?
We keep track of every work unit that goes out - if it is taking too long
getting the results back, the server will automatically send it out to
somebody else. Only after we get results back and confirm them we will
remove the work unit from disk.

Good effort and good reliability!

If you use the machine for other tasks, then it may as well stay busy
rather than idle.

If it is only running s@h, then my opinion is that you would contribute
more by contributing your electricity costs to s@h directly.

But hey, it's fun also...
