I heard, in the past, that if a wu takes >1 week to be returned they send it
out to another user. Recently I heard that is no longer true. So I did a
search through their FAQ pages and came up with this as the best answer:

What happens to work units that never get returned by us? Are they lost
forever?
We keep track of every work unit that goes out - if it is taking too long
getting the results back, the server will automatically send it out to
somebody else. Only after we get results back and confirm them we will
remove the work unit from disk.

This is true, but what they do not say is that it is STILL counted in
your stats even if it is redistributed to someone else, as long as you
return it.
This does not apply to the original poster because they wanted it for
doing actual helpful work. If the object is stats then by all means
use it, if on the other hand the object is meaningful work, then try
it out and see how long it takes to do a few units. If it is longer
than say a week on average then you may as well donate the computer.

I use the pc for email, web browsing so if I have it on I might as well
have
seti running. It will be quite a while before I get to 500 units though.

What do you think?

Good effort and good reliability!

If you use the machine for other tasks, then it may as well stay busy
rather than idle.

If it is only running s@h, then my opinion is that you would contribute
more by contributing your electricity costs to s@h directly.

But hey, it's fun also...

Roll on BOINC soon,
