I belong to a small SETI group. No one else has submitted a WU since
2000; and even the founder has left the group.
The SETI site says I can leave the group and take my statistics to
another group--or nowhere. Is it important, or helpful, to belong to a
group?

Fundamentally, it doesn't really matter if you join or leave a group, as
long as you complete as many WU' s as you feel you want to.
Of course, over the next few months, it's likely that SETI@Home as we know
it will wind down and cease.
So, for now, I wouldn't worry about the stats side of things.
