I know enough about computers and digital communications to be realistic
about connectivity problems but I think the SETI project sometimes fails to
provide an adequate level of communication to its clients. After all we're
volunteers, and participation is our only reward. They owe us more.

Agreed, and the communications should indicate what they are doing, plan
to do and when they anticipate the problem being solved.

I don't think they're doing that bad a job at communicating.

I seem to remember a message stating a lint to Cogent was finally
identified as the problem. Also, a part was being order and replaced.
Obviously the pressure/load on the lash up temporary repair has failed
in a big way.

From the home page:

"June 17, 2004
"We are working on fixing the network problems that are resulting in
dropped connections to the data server.

"June 18, 2004
"The campus network folks did some great troubleshooting and narrowed
down the problem to a faulty link on the path to our ISP. Repairs
have been called in."

While these messages offer little detail, I don't see that more
information would be of much help to us volunteers. I read it more or
less as "We're working on it; let your clients keep checking in; be
patient." What else do we really need to know?
