UMMM, the cpu/gpu are still generating the displays you just aren't
seeing them. The computer has no way of knowing whether you will turn
on the screen any second, so it generates the stuff just in case.
Yeah? Well, I think you're wrong. If you use the 'blank screen after x
minutes' option under the screensaver settings then the graphics are no
longer processed. What else would that setting be there when you also have
the 'turn the monitor off after x minutes' setting?
How are we to resolve this?
On s@h 1 (original, classic, whatever), the routines for preparing the
screen display still added a CPU overhead even when the blank setting
was enabled. Not as much as when fully displaying the graphics, but
still enough to give slower WU times.
Test it for yourself by comparing WU completion times/rates.
For Boinc, you could even look at the code to see for yourself!
