client like every other program out there

the reason i'm moaning about this is i'v set my cache to 1 day, and
since boninc is still being setup really it's not online a lot, so i
set my prefs to allow for more days of work to be downloaded, but
i'll be damned if i'm gonna go around every pc i have boinc installed
on to update the prefs manualy

It is 'auto'. (When the machine actually gets a connection to the server).
However, you can update manually if you so require. Then again, only if you
can get through to the server.
