1) I don't like the name (ok that is just personal.) When I hover the
mouse
over the tray icon it says "BOINC"...it would be nice to see more
information there
2) I think the current GUI is also pretty sparce, and boring.
3) I have only been successful twice in getting any data to process. 95%
of
the time I am getting:
"No work from Project", "Deferring communication with project for X hours,
X
minutes, and X seconds".
Join the crowd. Yeah, they really screwed up the public release, IMO.
I think the s/w is reasonable for a DC R1, but I have no idea what they
were thinking, "I.T., wise"???
If this was thier first try, I'd feel easier giving 'em a pass. But they've
had 5 yrs of SAH Classic to garner some experience and metrics.
I got in on CPDN on day one of the public release. They had none of these
probs. A little fine-tuning of the client, but nothing major that I can
recall.
4) It sucks that none of the old 3rd party tools will work. For example I
would like to see the status of computer running seti from *one* computer.
SAH Classic didn't have any 3rd party support at the release, either. Those
tools developed as interest and momentum grew. The same "should" occur
w/SAH BOINC, unless BOINC does not attract the interest that SAH1 did.
5) I think BOINC should still be very much considered beta, or at least
from
my perspective 95% non-functional.
I feel pretty good about the initial s/w release. Plus, I believe evolving
s/w upgrades were part of the plan. I think that's fine, if done w/i reason.
The I.T. infrastucture is the problem I see. WTH were they thinking?
At least they have the classic still going.
Yeah, but for me it's kinda' hard to get excited about it with the
move to the future, which is BOINC.
What's got me floored, is the old site has had a link to the new BOINC
site for over a week, even though BOINC hasn't delivered much in the
way of WU's for 4 or 5 days!
I am now considering whether or not I want to continue to participate. I
just have a bad taste in my mouth after this BOINC stuff...
Understandable. I'll continue on. Eventually it will get somewhat
straightened out. I think the basic premise behind SETI (not just SAH) is
too compelling of a cause to ignore. SAH is a way for me to participate in
SETI, while also enjoying one of my other hobbies, that being computing.
I think SAH2/BOINC's ultimate success will be determined, over time, by the
personal enjoyment provided by the new stats & scoring systems, and the user
involvement "fun factor". There will always be a 'true believer' contingent,
but there are now many other DC projects that a hobbyist can run.
If the BOINC environment is favorable, its project base will grow. If BOINC
proves to be a dud, other projects will shun it, and there will then be more
projects available outside the BOINC environment.
My concern, is that BOINC may become TOO successful. Then
we may end up w/a DC version of "Micro$oft vs The World"!
"Competition improves the breed", I say.
