I very much agree with your decision to respect Clive's POV,
and your pointing out the fact that we are only "listening".

But I'd like to expound on an issue

Clive's post strongly posits a scenario leading to a negative view on the
very topic that is the purpose of the n/g: SETI. He has every right to post
his thoughts, but one needs to expect a strongly contrarian POV is going to
draw some impassioned heated responses. Some may take it as flame-bait
or trolling.
