If you're on an x86 machine:

I downloaded the boinc executable recently. "gunzip" and boinc work fine. Don't forget the "chmod" to make the executable executable...

And use a command line so that you can see the output. Your first command should be:

boinc_3.18_i686-pc-linux-gnu -attach_project
