Hiya Rob Dekker.

You have to unleash yourself from conventional thought. It's what's
holding us back technologically. If some scientist today comes up with
some
radically new theory, the first thing other scientists do is rip it apart
rather that collaborate to get results. So long as that thinking continues
we'll never make significant progress into new technologies.

I think we have been making great progress dispite and maybe even
because of scientists and engineers critically looking at (rip-apart)
the benefits and burdens of every new technological discovery.

If you talk about new technologies, I agree that we can still improve
communication for some applications, by moving up in frequency.
Areas between 50GHz and 500GHz are barely even touched today,
and I am sure that smart extraterrestials will find great applications
in that area.

But other than limit of speed-of-light, there are no real downsides to using
EM transmission for communication.

Come to think about it, I'm actually quite convinced that EM
(the entire spectrum up till optical) is the best way of communication;
for short and long distance; now and in the future; for all intelligent
species.

(Again, short of tachions or major oversight of some physical
phenomena on our part).

Prove me wrong !
