  I figured that out <G>

I've got it running as a background task by starting it as a timed job
(at) because the task wouldn't stop with Ctrl-Z. I can check the progress
of work units using a similar method to the normal SETI client but I'm
wondering if it's possible to force updates like you can with a GUI
version. If I try to run the executable again it tells me it's already
running and exits.

Why? What are you trying to do exactly?

I've got boinc/seti running as a low-privileges user and just leave it running along with various other low priority tasks:

top - ... 0 users,  load average: 3.08, 3.16, 3.13
Tasks: 136 total,   4 running, 132 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombie
Cpu(s):  4.3% us,  1.0% sy, 94.7% ni,  0.0% id,  0.0% wa,  0.0% hi,  0.0% si

Despite that loading, the 2.6 kernel is fully responsive.

So far, it's behaved itself fine untouched. The only change I've made is to set the boinc cache to be for 0.5 to 1.0 days on the boinc user prefs (boinc website).

It should gracefully shut down on logout or shutdown. You can start it up with a startup script depending on how you use your system. Don't forget to use "su" as needs be so as not to run it as root.

I've not shut this thing down for a while... I'll set up the scripts whenever whatever next new tweaks are to be played with...

linux is kool!
