This is not true, I still have my e-mail with the password from the day that
I joined seti in 1999.
It was a short e-mail but none the less it contained my password. It looked
like this:

Your SETI@home web site password is XXXXXXXXXX.

I can't remember if it was send to me automatically or that I requested it
to edit my profile, but none the less the passwords existed.

Whose fault is that?  If you didn't keep your movements up to date, don't
blame them for not being clairvoyant.

There is some indication that origionally, passwords were not taken in
the early stages of the project.  Keeping up to date would not have
helped then.
