Dear Never anonymous Bud,
You wrote...
I guess the problem has been a bad [BOINC] install

It may not be directly applicable, but last weekend, I deleted 14 perfectly
good SETI-Classic cached work units, and a couple that were completed (!),
and reinstalled Classic because I thought my seti became corrupted.
Sometimes, there is no rhyme or reason with those SETI error messages.
Experience suggests that any trouble you're seeing is a function of trouble
in Berkeley-land. Don't throw out and re-install -- it won't fix the
problem.

On the lighter side however, I've finally learnt to spell Berkeley.
