Cool; no pun intended. Thanks for the heads up.
No problem. It's one of the few proggies I install on every machine I build.
Invaluable.
OK on the well ventilated case. I have old technology here. One fan
in the back, one in the power supply. My new Powerleap (Slot-1 CPU
upgrade) added a CPU-fan that the 450 MHz PIII didn't have, and it's
hard to hear the computer got slightly noisier. No temperature
monitoring, which is a real blind spot.
No overclocking as far as I know. It's the same ol' BIOS. However,
the Powerleap offers four jumpers for selecting one of 16 CPU
core-voltages. There was no advice on how to adjust that, so I just
selected the "Default,"
1.550V to 1.575V. I would try notching down the voltage, but I'm
afraid some faulty signal will cause my hard drive to be erased.
Powerleap's are expensive huh? I've just this afternoon ordered an
Upgradeware Slot-T which I believe does essentially the same thing. I have a
Slot 1 mobo that I'm particularly fond of and a Tualatin Celeron 1.4Ghz
sitting in my drawer so I thought why not get them together? What CPU are
you running? I think you mentioned it somewhere but I've been in so many
groups discussing hardaware, especially Tualatin upgrades, in the last 48
hours I forget.
Motherboards running the Intel 440BX chipset are awesome for tualatin CPUs.
I tried the Cel 1.4Ghz in a Via board I have here and got 87.3 marks with
CPUMark99. I have a friend who gets 123 marks with the same CPU in a BX
board. That is quite a large increase don't you think? If this Slot-T does
the job I have another Slot 1 board that I'll put my Cel 1.3Ghz in that is
currently in a Via board. It should shave a couple of hours of SETI WU
times.
Slowly gathering parts to build my next computer. Enjoying reading
about all the cases and customer reviews. Almost as educational as
hanging out on alt.sci.seti.
What are you looking to build?
Unlike ~misfit~, I don't pontificate too often.
Neither does ~misfit~. I guess you caught him while he was feeling
his oats.
Yeah, sorry stanmc, I'm a bit fanatical when it comes to hardware. It's my
hobby and I get a bit passionate about it. From time to time I have built
new machines for gaming friends and I wouldn't *dream* of letting a machine
go out the door that hasn't run Prime error-free for 24 hours on it's own,
then 24 hours in conjunction with SETI, then checking the MBM5 log for
temps, voltages etc. I also do the same with machines I re-build.
Hey ~misfit~, -- get your hands out of those oats.
But they feel so goooood!
