I was looking on their website for the CPU torture test, but all I could
find was information on their project. Finally , I concluded that the CPU
Torture Test - Prime95 - is also the same program they are using for their
prime number search. Do I understand that correctly? Therefore, if I run
the torture test on my CPU, I might also find the next prime number,
coincidentally? Better chance of that than finding E.T.?

Yes, the same program is used for the test and for searching.
So as not to pollute the search, the programmer has added an option for
you to just use the code for a diagnostic test. It then runs through
some severe number crunching and compares the calculated results against
the known good results. Sorry, you don't get to find any new primes.
I have it run in the background on low priority searching for new primes
as a continuous system check. Various checksums are made as part of the
calculations. Any errors should be checked out further!
Good luck,
Martin
