I'll be giving Gentoo a try myself sometime on a spare machine once I
get some spare time...
If you plan to try out a stage1 install, it's going to taske you some
time ;o) My Pentium4 1,6ghz sweated for some 25 hours, compiling Gentoo.
Whoa baby! If the target machine happens to have even a minor
instability during the compilaton, I can't even imagine the grief it could
cause. I wonder if it does any type of compilation error checking, along
the way?
Oh yes.....run "mirrorselect" as described in the Gentoo
handbook(http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml), and you have a
selection of the fastest mirrors. If a package is not available at one
mirror, "emerge" simply connects to another.
