First things first:  What else are you running while running SETI?  If I'm running a game like Railroad Tycoon 3 then I only get one or two data sets a day vs a normal day of four to five on my 1.8GHz P4.

Second you should upgrade your RAM to 512MB or more.  256MB is boarder line if you are running apps that require over 50MBs to run and you have a few TSRs loaded.  Turn off all animated screen savers.

And lastly make sure that you are actually running the COMMAND LINE VERSION of SETI.  "setiathome-3.08.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe".  I run mine using SETI DRIVER and SETI QUEUE.  Info on where to DL these are on the SETI@home web site.

hi all,

im wondering why, on my machine (2.8 ghz celeron processor, 256 meg 266 ddr memory, 400 mhz system bus, windows xp home addition) does seti take so long to finish a unit of work. the seti client that im using is version 3.08

it takes an average 8/9 hours.

looking at some of the bench mark stuff i found in another posting. it says it should take about three hours.

my machine is alway on and the only thing that runs most of the time is seti and NAV w/auto protect.

is there a way to speed seti up.

thanks to all that responded.

in summation to all the responses....

on my system im running the windows client and not the command-line version. i have no screen savers running period. most of the time i use this system for email/news groups and web surfing, mainly headline news.
NAV w/auto protect will never be disabled on this machine. as far as system maintenance i run disk cleanup/speedisk/ndd, virus scans, ad-aware and spybot AT LEAST once a week, usually more. all my software, system or application is current with patches and updates. the systems is well maintained.

on occasion i do run 3d games. when these are running the slowness of s@h is understandable.

i run firefox and thunderbird as web and email clients to avoid the problems with ie, outlook express and problems with spyware that come from using ie. i run hijackthis and startuplist, periodically to see what processed are running on my machine. nothing out of the ordinary.

i guess i just have to either live with the slownness or stop running the client period.

listed below are my stats from seti. i have been a member for quit sometime but only really started running the software full time since february 2004. in my first posting i said 8/9 hours to process a WU, seti says 14 hours per WU. this is even worse.
