There seems to be general unrest, and understandably so, here in the
SETI@home message boards regarding BOINC.

Yes, the new SETI@home/BOINC project is down, and it'll probably be
down until tomorrow afternoon. We found a bug that requires long SQL
queries/updates carefully synchronized with moving files around from
one storage device to another. All we can do is wait, basically.
Despite this, and all the other minor mishaps, BOINC is progressing
MUCH better than SETI@home I did in its early days. It took about 3
years after its launch for SETI@home to work as well as it does now.
Remember that BOINC's barely been live for a few months.

Thanks for the patience!

Happy crunchin' soon,
Martin

As much as I don't like the idea of knocking the folks at Berkeley too much.
C'mon! BOINC *should* be doing better than SETI classic did at start-up.
They've had five years of experience with distributed computing plus an
extensive period of beta-testing with BOINC with thousands of people
partaking in the testing. Also, technology has progressed in leaps and
bounds in five years.

At least they're apologising and thanking people for their patience in the
last couple of days. Unlike when SETI@home first started, there are lots of
other organisations clamouring for CPU cycles these days, they need to think
of their contributers. Up until a few days ago I got a general feeling of
arrogance from the Berkeley team. (In the little I saw in the way of
official statements from them). Almost as if *they* were providing a service
instead of us providing the service.
