Try changing the priorities with "Task Manager". (Press ctl-esc or shift-esc ? and play)

See if there are any options with your projects to set their priority.

Or try linux (;-)) The linux scheduler has a finer-grained priority scheme and also has the philosophy that _all_ tasks must make progress. You have a lot of control over what happens.
