Then your methodology for reaching conclusions is seriously flawed,
unsurprisingly after what you've said in this thread. I've been building my
own computers (and computers for others) since the 486 days and owned them
before then. I have my own LAN and a small SETI farm.
All but meaningless qualifications for judging a project the size of
SETI. (Especially based on your erroneous statements.)
I realise that quadrupling the load is quite a bit but then they did release it to
the public didn't they?
Not really. The sign up URL was leaked to the public and the SETI
team decided to just roll with the punch and to allow the public to
start running SETI BOINC.
My point is I'm surprised that it was only quadrupled,
I'm not. Anecdotal evidence indicates that a significant proportion
of SETI Classic users installed it months/days/years ago and are
simply letting it run. Emphatically they are not readers of the
bulletin boards, Slashdot, Usenet, etc; I.E. the places where the word
about SETI BOINC has been spread.
and they weren't even prepared for that.
And how were they supposed to have prepared? Nobody has ever run a
project of quite this nature before (I.E. virtually everyone having a
large cache), and they are limited in the availability of hardware.
In at least three instances in the last few weeks Berkeley have
blamed either hardware/bandwidth/ and I/O problems. That's
technology related don't you think?
And in multiple other instances the problems have been laid at the
feet of the software. Even where there have been problems, those
experienced with such things know that new installation always have
teething problems, especially at the size level of this project.
For sure. But it makes a lie of your statement that "Technology is
absolutely meaningless".
No, that statement remains a shining beacon of truth. No matter how
advanced the technology, you are still up the creek when you are
limited in the hardware available, and you will have problems when you
are getting the project off the ground. *period*.
