So I'll have to assume this memory problem is a one of a kind thing. 1 gig of
ram, XP pro and a P4  is not enough to run the current software available.
Or the software isn't compatible with the hardware.

Oh, there are trolls here, but not really too many.

About the resources:
personally I would think that 1 GB RAM is enough on a P4 running XP pro, but
I have no idea what other programs you run on it.
I have an XP home with 512 MB running SETI command line client, and on that PC
we play the SIMS :) well, every time the game is exited, memory isn't freed,
and eventually the PC is just awfully slow and we need to reboot.
it might be some program you run besides SETI...
