the poster, but did not explicitly state that he was limited to those
OSes or interested only in them.

He also asked the open-ended question "What OS seems to give the best
performance ..." and also asked under what environment was the SETI@home
software developed. He did not presume any particular OS or range of OSes
as likely answers.

I see no problem with suggesting Linux in reply to the original query.
